Set to electrify your ride.

We’re giving the capital a full charge of mobility. Thanks to the BVG, public transport in Berlin is already well on the road to its electric future. The last litre of diesel will be burned in less than ten years’ time.

E-METROBUS

Charging the future.

The “E-MetroBus” project is investigating scenarios in which e-buses can be used on highly used routes. Seventeen electrically-powered BVG articulated buses are being equipped with rapid charging technology for this purpose. This is particularly important given that buses have only limited time to recharge: especially in the city centre, this available time may vary due to traffic delays and road closures. With its frequent departures and high passenger numbers, many of them tourists, route 200 was selected for study on the project.
The research project, which runs until 2022, is being conducted by the BVG together with the Technische Universität Berlin and the Reiner Lemoine Institute. It will receive a total of 5.6 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure’s electric mobility aid scheme.

VEHICLE FLEET

Green power: the future of our buses

There will be 228 e-buses on Berlin’s streets by the end of 2022, with the entire fleet due to be electrified by 2030. An all-electric 18-metre articulated bus was recently added to our network. It was the first of 17 such buses that route 200 now exclusively runs, thus improving air quality in the city centre. And even the non-urban districts are gradually being conquered by e-buses. Already 121 electrically powered single-deckers are rolling through the districts of Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Pankow and Lichtenberg. In 2022, 90 more e-buses are to be procured, which will then also conquer the cityscape in Neukölln, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

We’re charging ahead.

More than two-thirds of the three million passengers we serve every day travel with electricity – on underground trains, trams, ferries, and growing numbers of buses. But that’s not all. We, too, have gone electric, with over 100 service vehicles that are supplied with 100% green electricity from almost 200 charging points. This means that almost all of our shared service vehicles are now electric and zero-emission. We do want to lead by example, after all.
