BVG Archive

150 years of public transport history

The BVG historical archive holds documents on the history of the BVG and some of its predecessor companies. As BVG employed its own photographers for many years, there is a large stock of around 200,000 photographs, which are gradually being digitised. Furthermore, there are files, annual reports, employee and customer magazines, posters, plans, route networks, timetable booklets and similar documents. The archive also has its own specialist library. Unfortunately, in November 1943 the entire BVG headquarters (then in Köthener Straße) burned to the ground. For the archive, this means that material from before that date is rare. Only printed material such as annual reports and staff newspapers could be recovered. The glass negatives of the then BVG photographer Walter Franck were also all lost and only a small part could be reconstructed using prints. Today, the BVG Historical Archive is located in the over 100-year-old Köpenick tram station. As the premises here are cramped, we can only receive you by appointment (preferably by e-mail). If there are any costs, we will of course inform you in advance.
